New Zealand photographer Peter Laurenson has always been drawn to the mountains, in particular in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Tibet. Over the course of three decades, he has made several visits to Khumbu, the Nepalese gateway to Mount Everest and home to the Sherpa people. Through his friendship with a local family, Peter has gained a unique insight into the Sherpa culture and has witnessed first-hand the momentous changes that have taken place in the region with the explosion of activity on Everest.

Peter has been a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club since 2002 and is an occasional climber, balancing time in the mountains with work and family commitments. He is the winner of several photo competitions and has had images and articles published at, in Wilderness Magazine, NZAC Vertigo and NZ Photographer.

At the festival, he will be speaking on his latest book; KHUMBU Gateway to Mount Everest Pathyways to Kinship.
